HOW TO MAKE "GRANNY SQUARES" and 'CROCHETING for DUMMIES" !
69CROCHETING FOR DUMMIES
Let us begin how to make "granny squares", with the items needed to start "Crocheting" "Granny Squares". The first item is a CROCHET HOOK which comes in various sizes depending on how tight or how loose you feel is right for the "granny square" in the project you are working .
A size G or 6 Crochet Hook would be a good size to start with. Next is the type of YARN that your project calls for, which may be either WOOL, COTTON or ACRYLIC. These various types of yarns are sold by the SKEINS.
Unlike in days gone by, you need not shear a Sheep to get the wool to spin into yarn. A trip to your favorite yarn store where you may purchase the items necessary to begin "crocheting" "Granny Squares" would be helpful.
'Granny Squares' are made from the center out. Begin "crocheting" a small circle of yarn and work to the outside. The "granny square" may be a total solid color or you may use different color yarn to make a multi-colored 'granny square'.
Play the two (2) videos below, on how to make "granny squares" and how to attach "granny squares" for a visual demonstration. A four (4) inch 'granny square' is a great size for an Afghan. See the attached pictures.
Now that you have made a number of 'granny squares', your next step is to connect them to one another. I have attached a video "How to attach "granny squares" when viewed shows you the step by step way to attach one granny square to another.
A word of caution, DO NOT combine different yarns such as wool, cotton or acrylic into the "granny squares" used in a single project.
By using the same kind of yarn for the entire item being made the finished project will wear evenly with repeated washing, dry cleaning and usage.
Also, DO NOT USE " hand wash only " yarns in the same "granny square" with " DRY CLEAN ONLY " yarns.
I will offer you a few suggestions on what you can make with these awesome "Granny Squares". First and my number one favorite is the LAP BLANKET.
Today, more and more senior citizens are being cared for in Nursing Homes and many are confined to a wheelchair. A Lap Blanket for these people is one of the greatest gifts you can give them, for it offers them the warmth they desire.
A Lap Blanket made from Wool, offers the very best warmth. A perfect lap blanket size is one made from 108 four (4) inch granny squares for a 30 by 40 inch blanket.
A service project to supply Lap Blankets to the elderly in a nursing home would be a fantastic idea for any person or club.
Other suggestions are as follows: Table Runner, Vest, Poncho, Bags, Hat, Rugs, Coasters, Pot Holders, Placemats, Baby Blankets, Shawls, Afghan, Sweaters and Scarves.
