HOW TO FIX 5 HOUSEHOLD HEADACHES

Doing a little Home Maintenance on your own can save you a lot of money. I will explain to you how to fix five headaches in your home or apartment. First lets start with Hairline Wall Cracks: These are generally caused by your home's settling and not a structural problem. With a utility knife clean the crack. Cut the crack after cleaning in an inverted "V" shape but not to deep. Clean the crack with a damp rag, then fill the inverted cut with joint compound (Spackle). Overfill the crack slightly for shrinkage. With extra fine sand paper sand the surface until all Spackle and the wall is as smooth as a baby's behind.

(2) Now lets take care of those popped nails in the dry wall. Remove the old nails and replace them with ringed nails that you can buy at a Home Depot, Lowes or your local hardware store. Drive the nail heads flush with the dry wall. Be careful not to hit the nails so hard that you leave the impression of the hammer head on the wall. If you do, do not worry, easy fix with Spackle. Now lets countersink the nail using a nail punch if you have access to one, if not use another nail. To countersink nail, hit the nail head with another nail and hammer to avoid damaging the wall. Now, fill the depression with spackle, then using extra fine sand paper sand smooth and repaint wall.

(3) Lets take a look at that running toilet flush tank . Like a leaky faucet, a running flush tank costs you money in water bills. Usually, you can stop the flow of water by slightly bending the end of the float rod down. Hold the rod in the middle so the bending pressure you exert will not damage the threaded end of the rod where it screws into the valve. Just be a little gentle.

(4) Loose Door Hinges, we all have them, first remove the screws and plug the the hole with toothpicks or wooden matchsticks with the head removed. Now, reinsert the screw. If the hole is really chewed up, plug it with a piece of soft wood and glue. Make sure the top of the plug is flush with the surface of the material that surrounds it. If it isn't, the plug will throw the door out of alignment.

(5) Loose Shade Brackets. The nails supplied with the new window shade are often tiny and very tough to drive without hitting your thumb with a hammer. These tiny nails tend to pull out when you pull the shade down. Instead of using these supplied nails, use small round head screws. For easy driving, punch pilot holes for the screws with a small finishing nail.
